Tesco Introduces Innovative Health Zones with Bupa Partnership

Tesco, the UK’s leading supermarket chain, is taking a fresh approach to customer wellness with a pioneering new store concept. 

In a bid to bring health services closer to home, Tesco is partnering with private healthcare providers, including Bupa, to offer in-store and remote health services that are accessible to everyone, regardless of health insurance or Bupa membership. 

This innovative concept will debut in three locations: the newly refurbished Cheshunt Extra store, followed by Tesco stores in Hexham and West Durrington in 2025.

The health zones are designed to provide customers with access to a variety of essential health services. Through the partnership with Bupa, customers can receive support for weight management, earwax removal, and even virtual GP appointments. 

In addition to these services, Tesco is collaborating with other private providers to offer oral hygiene advice and menopause symptom support. 

By launching these health zones, Tesco aims to meet customers’ healthcare needs in one convenient location, bringing preventive and proactive health support right into the heart of their shopping experience.

This pilot programme reflects Tesco’s commitment to improving public health in a way that seamlessly integrates with customers’ daily routines. The company currently operates 365 pharmacies within its larger stores, out of a total of 2,048 locations across the country. 

This latest initiative marks a significant expansion of Tesco’s health offerings, allowing shoppers at select stores to consult with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, book GP appointments at times that suit them, and access nutrition supplements – all without needing to make an additional trip.

Tesco’s Chief Commercial Officer commented on the launch, highlighting the importance of early health intervention. They expressed that good health starts with good food, but it also relies on people being able to get the right support, advice and care as early as possible to help prevent ill health and not just manage it.

This philosophy underpins Tesco’s new health zone model, emphasising accessible and convenient care options that aim to address the root causes of health concerns rather than merely treating symptoms.

The Cheshunt Extra store will be the first to unveil these health zones, where customers can expect to receive expert advice and guidance on a range of health issues, from managing chronic conditions to supporting general wellness goals. 

Furthermore, Tesco plans to test, learn, and listen closely to customer feedback during the pilot, adapting and expanding its services based on insights gathered from customer experiences. 

If successful, this trial could see health zones rolled out across additional Tesco stores nationwide, potentially transforming how UK consumers access healthcare.
