Symington’s Sets Sustainability Benchmark with Packaging Solution

In a significant move towards sustainability, Symington’s has adopted Greiner Packaging’s award-winning K3® r100 self-separating packaging for its Oatburst instant porridge brand.

This makes Symington’s the first food producer in the United Kingdom to embrace this groundbreaking packaging solution, which promises to revolutionise recycling practices and set a new industry standard.

Since 2021, Symington’s has been utilising Greiner Packaging’s K3® cardboard-plastic packaging for its Naked brand instant noodles. Building on this success, the transition to K3® r100 for Oatburst underscores the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in packaging solutions.

Greiner Packaging UK & Ireland’s Sustainability and Innovation Manager lauded the K3® r100 as a product innovation that has made the impossible possible, highlighting its revolutionary impact on recycling efficiency.

The K3® r100 packaging is designed to automatically separate its cardboard wrap from the plastic container during the waste disposal process, eliminating the need for consumer intervention. This innovative feature ensures a high recyclability rate of up to 98%, a significant improvement over previous K3® versions that required manual separation by consumers.

What’s more, this advancement means that the recyclability of the packaging no longer relies on consumer behaviour, thereby increasing the overall recycling rates and reducing environmental impact.

Symington’s Finance Director highlighted the practical benefits of this new packaging, noting that Oatburst is ideal for people on the go. They expressed delight that consumers can now dispose of the empty containers without worrying about separating the materials themselves, as the self-separating technology ensures the packaging is correctly sorted and recycled during the waste disposal process.

They also emphasised their enthusiasm for the K3® r100, confident that they are offering a perfectly recyclable product to the market. The director mentioned that Symington’s was already impressed with the original K3® packaging solution from Greiner Packaging, but the new K3® r100 development takes their commitment to sustainability to a new level.

Invented over 40 years ago by Greiner Packaging, the K3® cardboard-plastic cup was designed with recycling in mind. It features a tear-tab for easy manual separation of the cardboard outer wrap from the lightweight plastic cup.

However, the K3® r100 takes this a step further by automating the separation process before the packaging reaches the near-infrared detection (NIR) system at recycling facilities. This ensures that the cardboard and plastic are correctly identified and sorted into their respective material streams for recycling.

The innovative K3® r100 received the prestigious World Star Packaging Awards in January and the Green Packaging Star Award last October from the Austrian magazine KOMPACK. These accolades highlight the significant impact of the K3® r100 on sustainable packaging practices and recognise Greiner Packaging’s continuous efforts to advance eco-friendly solutions.

Greiner Packaging’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is evident in the development of the K3® r100. The company has continually pushed the boundaries of what is possible in packaging technology, ensuring that their products not only meet but exceed environmental standards.

Furthermore, the K3® r100’s ability to self-separate before reaching the NIR system is a testament to this commitment, leading to more efficient recycling processes and reducing the burden on consumers to correctly dispose of packaging.

Symington’s adoption of the K3® r100 for its Oatburst brand marks a notable advancement in sustainable packaging. By leveraging Greiner Packaging’s pioneering technology, Symington’s is setting a new standard for the food industry, demonstrating that convenience and sustainability can go hand in hand.

This move not only benefits the environment but also assures consumers that their packaging choices contribute positively to global recycling efforts.

In conclusion, Symington’s and Greiner Packaging have showcased the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing environmental challenges. The introduction of the K3® r100 self-separating packaging for the Oatburst brand is a significant step forward in the journey towards a more sustainable future.

As more companies follow Symington’s lead, the potential for widespread positive environmental impact grows, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in the packaging industry.
