NHS Begins Spring COVID-19 Booster Rollout to Protect the Most Vulnerable
The NHS has launched its latest COVID-19 vaccination drive across England, with a spring booster programme aimed at safeguarding those most at risk from serious illness.
From 1 April, vulnerable groups are being invited to come forward for their latest dose – and over half a million people have already booked their appointments.
The renewed vaccination effort is targeting those aged 75 and over (by 17 June 2025), residents in older adult care homes, and anyone aged six months and over with a weakened immune system.
In total, around 7.5 million people across England are expected to receive an invitation to top-up their protection against COVID-19.
Appointments can be booked quickly and easily through the NHS App, by email, text message, or post – with daily walk-in appointments also available for added convenience.
COVID-19 Still a Threat Despite Fewer Headlines
While media coverage of the pandemic may have subsided, the threat of COVID-19 has certainly not gone away.
Latest figures show that more than 1,000 patients are currently being treated in hospital every single day with the virus. The spring booster is designed specifically to reduce the risk of severe illness, particularly as new variants continue to emerge.
Consultant epidemiologists from the UK Health Security Agency have pointed to the success of last year’s spring booster programme. Data showed that among the most vulnerable, the vaccine reduced the risk of serious illness and hospitalisation by over 40% – for as long as nine weeks following vaccination.
Strong Early Response from the Public
NHS England’s national medical director welcomed the positive initial response to the rollout, highlighting that more than half a million people have already booked their spring booster since appointments opened.
They expressed that this is fantastic to see. Protection from the COVID-19 vaccination does reduce over time, which is why it’s so important that those in the most at-risk groups come forward and get their top-up.
Final Word
As England moves through another year living alongside COVID-19, the NHS spring booster programme serves as a timely reminder: while the virus may no longer dominate daily headlines, its impact remains very real for the most vulnerable in society.
With 7.5 million people set to be invited, and thousands already booked in, this latest booster drive offers renewed protection – helping to reduce hospitalisations, ease pressure on healthcare services, and most importantly, save lives.
