Inspired Pet Nutrition Acquires Butcher’s Pet Care

In a significant move that could reshape the pet food industry, Inspired Pet Nutrition (IPN) has announced its acquisition of Butcher’s Pet Care (BPC) for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition creates a formidable combined business with an estimated turnover of around £350 million, marking a major milestone in IPN’s ambitious growth strategy. This deal not only enhances IPN’s portfolio but also strengthens its position in the competitive European pet food market.

Leading the enlarged group will be Arthur van Benthem, the newly appointed CEO who brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious career in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry.

Van Benthem’s background includes senior roles at prestigious companies such as Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Royal FrieslandCampina, where he honed his expertise in brand management, strategy, and leadership. His most recent position was as chief executive of Dunlop Protective Footwear, where he was credited with driving significant growth.

The CEO expressed their enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting how Butcher’s brand portfolio perfectly complements IPN’s existing range. They also emphasised that this acquisition aligns with IPN’s vision of creating a diverse portfolio of natural, wet, and dry pet food brands that deliver superior nutrition at an affordable price.

Butcher’s Pet Care brings a wealth of experience and a strong brand presence in the wet pet food category, which is highly complementary to their existing offerings.

Therefore, this acquisition not only allows them to expand their product range but also gives them a solid platform to accelerate their growth across Europe, particularly in markets where they see substantial opportunities.

Founded in 1983, Butcher’s Pet Care has grown to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of wet pet food, recognised for its commitment to quality and innovation. The company produces a range of wet dog and cat food products under three main brands: Butcher’s dog food, Blink!, and Classic

Additionally, Butcher’s is a significant player in the own-label pet food sector, supplying products to major retailers and specialist pet shops. The company’s state-of-the-art 385,000 sq ft manufacturing and distribution facility in Crick, Northamptonshire, is a testament to its investment in quality and efficiency.

The CEO of Butcher’s Pet Care shared their excitement about joining forces with IPN and CapVest, the international investment firm that acquired IPN in 2020. This partnership is a fantastic opportunity for Butcher’s, and together with IPN and CapVest, they share a passion for delivering the best nutrition for pets and a commitment to excellence in everything they do.

Furthermore, they went on to express that they are eager to leverage IPN’s resources and expertise to pursue their growth ambitions and continue providing high-quality products to their devoted customers.

This acquisition is the latest in a series of strategic moves by IPN, following its purchase of Pet Food UK in 2021. That deal brought the premium dog and cat food brands Barking Heads and Meowing Heads into the IPN family, further expanding its footprint in the premium pet food segment.

The senior partner at CapVest, who has been instrumental in guiding IPN’s growth strategy, commented on the significance of the Butcher’s acquisition, emphasising that Butcher’s is a great addition to the IPN platform, creating a business of greater scale and presence across a range of categories, channels, and customer segments.

What’s more, they continued on that this deal exemplifies CapVest’s passion for building strong, differentiated global companies through significant investment in people, technology, innovation, and capabilities. With Arthur van Benthem’s extensive experience leading the charge, they are confident in their ability to capitalise on the multitude of growth opportunities ahead.

The acquisition of Butcher’s Pet Care by Inspired Pet Nutrition is expected to be finalised by the fourth quarter of 2024. As both companies prepare to integrate their operations, the expanded IPN group is set to enhance its market position and deliver even greater value to pet owners across Europe.

In conclusion, this strategic acquisition represents a bold step forward for Inspired Pet Nutrition. By bringing together the strengths of IPN and Butcher’s Pet Care, the combined entity is poised to lead the way in the pet food industry, delivering superior nutrition to pets while driving growth in new markets.

With a seasoned leadership team and the backing of CapVest, IPN is well-positioned to continue its journey of innovation, expansion, and excellence in the years to come.
