What Is CE Marking and Why Does It Matter?
If you’re running a business or you’re looking to buy certain products, it’s important that you know about CE marking. This is a certification that products sold in the EU must have in order to show that they meet certain safety and quality standards.
In this blog post, we’ll explain what CE marking is and why it matters for businesses.
What is CE Marking?
CE marking (or “Conformité Européenne”- the French for European conformity) is a certification mark that indicates that certain products are compliant with all of the applicable European health, safety and environmental protection requirements.
Many products that are traded on the European Economic Area‘s single market have the letters ‘CE’ appear on them. CE marking is required for a wide variety of products, from electrical equipment to toys and from civil explosives to medical devices.
The CE marking is a proof that
- the manufacturer has checked that these products comply with EU safety, health and environmental requirements.
- product is in compliance with EU legislation
- free movement of product throughout the European market is now possible
CE marking on a product indicates that the manufacturer accepts responsibility for conformity with all legal requirements for the product.
By performing this action, the manufacturer is verifying the product’s validity to be sold in the EEA. This also applies to products made outside of the EEA that are being sold within it and Turkey. Only specific products that fall under certain directives require a CE marking.
CE marking does not automatically mean that a product was made in the European Economic Area, but it does show that the product was assessed for quality before being put up for sale.
CE Marking: Responsibilities for Manufacturers
As a manufacturer, you are responsible for the following steps:
- conformity assessment,
- technical file creation,
- issuing an EC Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
- placing CE marking on products
You – as the manufacturer- or your authorised representative are the only ones who can place CE markings. When you affix the CE marking to your product, you are taking full responsibility for ensuring that your product meets the requirements of all relevant directives.
You must use only the CE marking to show the product’s conformity with the relevant directives. Do not put any labels or signage that could give a false impression of the CE marking to other people. You must not cover up the CE marking with other markings placed on the product.
CE marking cannot be placed on products that don’t apply to the relevant European directives.
If you are a distributor, always remember to check for the CE marking and supporting documentation before accepting products.
If you’re looking to import a product from outside of the EU, you’ll need to first verify that the manufacturer has taken care of all the necessary steps and checks. This includes having the proper documentation in order.
CE Marking – Image Rules
Depending on the specifics of the directive that covers your product, you must make sure that:
– The initials ‘CE’ must be recognisable in their standard form.
– The letters CE must always be in proportion to the standard size, no matter how big or small you make your markings.
– The CE marking must be at least 5 millimetres in dimension, unless a larger minimum dimension is specified by the directive.
– The CE marking should be placed on the product itself or onto its data plate. If this is not possible, for example because of the nature of the product, it must instead be placed on packaging and accompanying documents.
– The CE marking is clearly visible, readable and permanent.
Why is CE Marking Important?
CE marking helps to ensure the safety of products in the European marketplace and gives consumers confidence that the product they are purchasing is safe.
With CE marking, customers can be sure that a product has met all applicable EU regulations regarding quality and safety. It also serves as a source of trust when it comes to buying goods from outside the EU, ensuring that they have met the same standards as their EU counterparts.
In addition, CE marking helps to reduce paperwork and simplify trade across the European Economic Area (EEA), making it easier for customers to purchase products without worrying about compliance issues.
Ultimately, CE marking serves to make sure that all the applicable directives are being followed and that customers can trust the products they’re buying. This helps to foster a safe, trustworthy and competitive market where customers can be confident in their purchases.
For consumers looking for goods and services that meet European safety standards, CE marking is essential information. Be sure to always look for this mark when considering your purchases – it could make all the difference.
