Bakkavor Group Acquires Moorish, the UK Hummus Brand
In an exciting development within the fresh prepared food sector, Bakkavor Group, a leading provider of fresh prepared food, has announced the acquisition of Moorish, the renowned UK hummus brand.
Founded in 2012 by Julie Waddell, Moorish has made a significant impact with its innovative and award-winning products, including the UK’s first smoked hummus. Today, Moorish products are widely available across major supermarket chains and independent retailers, boasting a revenue exceeding £2 million.
Moorish will now join the impressive portfolio of brands under Bakkavor’s wing, which includes Pizza Express, The Delicious Dessert Company, The Pizza Company, and the recently acquired Pinch.
Despite the transition, Moorish’s Managing Director, Andy Atherton, will remain involved in a consultancy capacity to ensure a smooth transition and continued growth.
Waddell, reflecting on the brand’s journey from her kitchen table to national prominence, expressed immense pride in Moorish’s achievements. She noted that the past 12 years of creating innovative and beloved products for UK consumers have been incredibly rewarding.
Starting from their kitchen table in 2012, it’s been quite a journey to see the business grow into what it is today. They are also incredibly proud of what Moorish has achieved and have thoroughly enjoyed growing the brand and product range from scratch to success with their team.
What’s more, for the last 12 years, their job has been to create innovative, delicious products that are loved by consumers across the United Kingdom. In Bakkavor, there are so many great opportunities still to explore with the brand, and they will enjoy watching Moorish flourish as the new owners take it to the next level.
Bakkavor Group CEO praised Moorish’s high-quality and innovative product range, emphasising its fit with Bakkavor’s existing dips business. The high-quality, innovative Moorish products will be a great addition to their existing brands and will complement their existing dips business.
Furthermore, it is strongly believed that the Moorish brand has so much more potential than just houmous, and they are excited about expanding it into other relevant Bakkavor categories in the future.
Continuing on, they also wish to congratulate Julie, Andy, and the team on the great brand they have built and are looking forward to growing it further under their ownership.
The acquisition process was facilitated by a corporate finance team from Dow Schofield Watts’ Leicester office, including partner Harry Walker, director Fahim Kassam, and associate director Daniel Chouciño, alongside a legal team from Gunnercooke in Leicester led by Jahid Ali.
Bakkavor Group was advised by a team from Gowling WLG’s Birmingham office, led by Chris Towle and Andreea Serban.
Commenting on the deal, Walker expressed satisfaction with the partnership, stating that they are really pleased to have found a fantastic partner for Moorish moving forwards. Working with the whole Moorish team to prepare the business for sale and then identify the right home has been a pleasure.
They went on to further express that they are looking forward to seeing Moorish in even more outlets in the future and continuing to enjoy their amazing products.
To conclude, this acquisition marks a significant milestone for both Bakkavor Group and Moorish. As Moorish integrates into Bakkavor’s extensive brand portfolio, there is great anticipation for the continued growth and innovation of Moorish products.
The partnership promises to enhance the brand’s reach and bring even more delicious and creative products to consumers across the UK. The synergy between Bakkavor’s expansive resources and Moorish’s inventive spirit is expected to pave the way for exciting developments in the fresh prepared food market.
As both companies look to the future, this acquisition stands as a testament to their shared commitment to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction.
