Aldi Leads the Way in Sustainable Packaging with Recycled Plastic

In a pioneering move, Aldi has become the first UK supermarket to introduce recycled plastic in its own-label crisp packaging. 

The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket has launched this initiative with its Specially Selected Hand Cooked range, which now features a minimum of 35% recycled content. This innovative packaging has already been rolled out nationwide, marking a significant step forward in the supermarket’s sustainability efforts.

Following this initial rollout, Aldi plans to extend the use of recycled plastic to its own-label popcorn and lentil chips by the end of the year. This change is projected to eliminate 78 tonnes of virgin plastic from use annually, contributing substantially to the reduction of plastic waste

What’s more, this initiative is a part of Aldi’s broader goal to achieve 50% recycled content in its plastic packaging by 2025.

Aldi’s Plastics and Packaging Director emphasised the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, stating that at Aldi, they are continuously making changes to reduce plastic waste, and they understand how crucial this is to their customers as well. 

Furthermore, increasing the recycled content in their crisp packaging is just one way that they are helping their customers reduce their environmental impact. All these little changes add up to make an even bigger difference.
