Aldi Leads the Charge in Sustainable Packaging
In a groundbreaking move for the retail sector, Aldi has emerged as the trailblazer in environmental consciousness, becoming the first supermarket in England and Wales to transition to 100% recycled plastic across its soft drink and water bottle own-label range.
This monumental shift, excluding only the caps and labels, marks a significant stride towards a more sustainable future.
Embracing innovation, Aldi has opted for rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) plastic to package all Aldi-branded products within the soft drinks section of its stores. This eco-friendly decision is projected to save an impressive 10,000 tonnes of virgin plastic per year, equivalent to approximately 2,000 African elephants in weight.
It’s a substantial commitment to environmental stewardship, forming part of Aldi’s broader strategy to integrate 50% recycled content into its plastic packaging across all sectors by 2025.
Not content with merely reducing plastic waste, Aldi continues to push the boundaries of sustainability with its recent foray into paper bottle packaging. The introduction of its own-brand wine range, housed in Frugalpac paper bottles made from 94% recycled paperboard, represents a pioneering initiative within the UK supermarket landscape.
The Cambalala South African Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc, encased in Frugal Bottles, hit Aldi shelves on March 18th, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious packaging.
Speaking on the significance of these initiatives, Aldi UK’s plastics and packaging director emphasised the importance of customer concerns regarding packaging sustainability and disposal practices.
