UK Government Funds £3.3m for Miscanthus Upscaling

The UK government issues £3.3 million in funding, to facilitate more planting of the perennial bioenergy crop, Miscanthus, to contribute to 2050 net zero targets, through the second phase of the government’s Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme.

Miscanthus is a perennial bioenergy crop , capable of growing on marginal land with low inputs, making it an ideal crop to contribute towards the government’s 2050 net zero targets.

The £3.3 million in funding will be used to support the upscaling of Miscanthus production across the UK, as well as research and development into new cultivars best suited to different UK climates. This will help to ensure that Miscanthus can play a significant role in meeting the UK’s future renewable energy needs.

The Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme was set up by BEIS in 2021 to offer start-ups and small and medium-sized businesses the opportunity to explore new technologies that will lead to profitable, commercially viable  biomass production innovations.

Phase Two will run until March 2025 to demonstrate the innovative new methods tested.

The awarded projects belong to TerravestaMendel Biotechnology, Crop-Tech, GrowBioM, CeresPower, Viridor, Reaseheath College and the University of Edinburgh.
